Orthodontic Emergencies
At Naylor Orthodontics in Maysville, KY 41056 and West Union, OH 45693, we understand that orthodontic emergencies can happen unexpectedly. While true orthodontic emergencies are rare, occasional issues may arise during treatment with braces or other orthodontic appliances.
Orthodontic emergencies typically fall into two categories: problems related to orthodontic appliances and direct injuries to the mouth or teeth.
Emergencies Related to Orthodontic Appliances
Brackets, wires, or bands may occasionally become loose or irritated during treatment. If you experience a loose bracket, broken wire, or discomfort from a poking appliance, please call our office during regular patient hours to schedule an appointment. For the safety and convenience of all patients, we are unable to accommodate walk-in emergency visits.
Until we can see you, here are some temporary solutions:
- If a tie wire is irritating your cheek or lip, cover it with orthodontic wax. You may also gently tuck it under the archwire using the eraser end of a pencil or a cotton swab.
- A loose band or bracket can usually remain in place temporarily. Contact our office so we can schedule a repair if necessary.
- If a wire is protruding and causing discomfort, you may carefully reposition it with a pencil eraser. In some cases, a clean nail clipper can trim a small section of wire if absolutely needed. If the issue persists, call us for assistance.
Prompt attention helps prevent treatment delays.
Direct Injuries to the Mouth or Teeth
If you experience a direct injury to your mouth, whether you are currently in orthodontic treatment or not, apply ice to the affected area immediately and contact your general dentist as soon as possible.
If a tooth has been displaced, fractured, or knocked out, your family dentist is typically best equipped to manage the emergency, as specialized materials and anesthesia may be required. An X-ray is often necessary to assess the extent of the injury.
Once you have been evaluated by your general dentist, contact Naylor Orthodontics so we can assess and repair any damaged orthodontic appliances as soon as possible.
After-Hours Orthodontic Emergencies
If you are experiencing significant discomfort outside of regular office hours, please contact our office for instructions on how to reach the appropriate provider. Our voicemail system provides guidance for urgent orthodontic situations.
If you are facing a severe dental injury or medical emergency, seek immediate medical attention.
